On March 12, 2020, Nanaimo will participate in a national Point-in-Time Count to gather information and data about those affected by homelessness.

Led by the Nanaimo Homeless Coalition, Nanaimo Region John Howard Society, and United Way Central & Northern Vancouver Island, trained volunteers will survey individuals staying in shelters, short-term housing and sleeping rough on the streets.

The Point-in-Time Count is essential to us understanding how residents are falling into homelessness and what their needs are. The Count also helps us direct where further resources and services are needed to support those living on the street.

The Point-in-Time Count is a huge undertaking and requires the participation of the local community. If you’d like to give back and learn more about homelessness, this is a great opportunity!

Volunteers are needed to conduct surveys and to help at the community homeless count event.

All that’s required is attending a two-hour training session on:

Thursday, March 5, 2020 or Saturday, March 7, 2020

Contact the John Howard Society directly to sign-up at 250-754-1266.

To encourage participating in the count, we offer care packages for people facing homelessness.

We need a large number of new and used donated items to create these packages:

Donations may be dropped off at Nanaimo John Howard Society

Where: 2353 Rosstown Road, Nanaimo, V9T 3R6

When: Weekdays, January 15 to March 11, 2020 | between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm

We are also seeking donations of large quantities of food to provide a lunch or BBQ at the community homeless count event.

Food items could include hot dogs, ground beef patties, buns, fruit, vegetables, condiments, chips, cookies, sandwich items etc.

Filmmaker Krista Loughton befriends four chronically homeless people on the streets of Victoria in an effort to help them heal their lives. These four people reveal the heartrending realities of their lives. The severe challenges of life on the street are portrayed with an unapologetic openness, in both emotive and humorous ways. Us & Them is a film about transformation through human connection.
