Word on the Street Community Bulletin Board – Nanaimo Homeless

Jul 2020 | Funding

Literacy Central Vancouver Island, an active Nanaimo Homeless Coalition member, is launching the Word On The Street Community Bulletin Board in their store-front window at 19 Commercial St. (the front of Well Read Books) in summer 2020.

A literacy outreach project funded by a City of Nanaimo Social Response Grant, this community bulletin board will focus on information for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The display will be dedicated to announcements, news, stories and jokes, to help keep people informed and connected.

Since COVID-19 began, WIFI hot-spots and computer access are difficult to find. This makes access to information challenging and sporadic for many people in our community. The community bulletin board will serve as another way to share vital information with those who have a hard time getting it.

The regularly updated community bulletin board will feature a map of local service agencies, service updates and important public announcements, including health warnings and pandemic restrictions.

“We also want to provide a venue for inclusive, respectful expression and participation. We’ll be inviting people experiencing homelessness and those who are precariously housed to submit ideas or stories that may be featured in the window display,” says Rhiannon, Outreach Coordinator with Literacy Central Vancouver Island (active member of Nanaimo Homeless Coalition).

The project team is looking for service updates and announcements from service agencies, as well as submissions from writers. If you have any information to share, please send it to streetword@literacycentralvi.org.
