Community : Low Barrier Primary Care Outreach project
Island Health and the Division of Family Practice have launched a Low Barrier Primary Care Outreach project with doctors, nurses and peers from Open Heart Collaborative.
Operating out of their van Monday to Friday, the team is offering primary care where it’s needed most. The physicians and nurses are able to provide immediate care on-site and are able to provide referrals and advice when additional care is required. Services provided include STI testing, pregnancy tests and prenatal care, advice, referrals, prescriptions, wound care, mental health and substance use referrals.
In addition to primary care, the team distributes harm reduction supplies. They also have personal care supplies like feminine hygiene products, hygiene kits, dental kits, water bottles, Ensure drinks and more.
They are at various locations in the community every weekday morning from 9 am to 12 noon.
· Monday: Caledonia showers at Wall Street
· Tuesday: Parking lot of Cavan and Old Victoria
· Wednesday: Labieux Modular Housing (residents only on location)
· Thursday: Newcastle Modular Housing (residents only on location)
