Community Profile : Winter overnight shelter opening

A winter overnight shelter will open at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church (301 Machleary Street) on November 15, 2020 until March 31, 2021.

The hours of operation will be 8:30pm to 7am daily. There are 24 beds and all genders are welcome. Once guests enter for the evening, they will not be permitted to come and go.

This cold weather shelter is a vital service in our community, funded by BC Housing. This year, the shelter is operated by the Unitarian Fellowship who have operated a shelter on Townsite Road for 12 years. They also operate the Shower Program at Caledonia Park. They have strong relationships with many people facing homelessness our community.

“We’re proud to be operating this much-needed winter shelter, giving some of our unsheltered neighbours a warm place to sleep,” says Isha Matous-Gibbs, Executive Director of the Nanaimo Unitarian Shelter.

Guests at the shelter will receive a light meal/snack in the evenings and in the mornings. This year, the staffing model has expanded for additional indoor and outdoor support.
